Why paintball beats a bowling alley or laser tag
Nine and ten year-olds are picky. What was fun at seven is “boring” at nine. Bowling? Done that. Laser tag? Been there. Crazy golf? Not on their life.
Paintball is different because:
1. It feels grown-up. For kids in the 9-13 age range, paintball feels like something adults do — a big step up from softplay parties. That novelty is the whole point of a birthday party. 2. It burns energy — 2 hours in the woods running around with paintball markers means you don’t have to organise anything else for the afternoon. Kids go home exhausted (and happy). 3. It’s inclusive — even the shy kid ends up laughing. No skill barrier like bowling (where the athletic kids dominate) or laser tag (where the tallest kid can always see over cover). 4. Photos are amazing — parents share the group photos in their WhatsApp groups for days afterwards. Free birthday marketing for you. 5. It ticks the “we did something different” box — parents remember the party they helped organise for another year.
For the parents footing the bill, the maths also works: a party for 10 kids at W.A.R is £220-£330 all-in. A bowling party is often £250+ once you add food and shoe hire. And nobody is coming to a bowling party on a WhatsApp group four years later saying “Charlie’s paintball party was legendary.”
Two age tracks — kids 8+ or teens/adults
We run birthday parties on two separate formats depending on age:
Splatmaster (aged 8-10)
Lightweight spring-powered markers, low velocity, small paintballs. Suitable for kids as young as 8. All the fun of paintball with much less impact.
- Session length: 90 minutes of play + 30 min briefing/kit + 30 min party area = 2h30 total on site
- Balls included: 100 per player, refills available
- Adult supervision: 1:8 minimum ratio — we run this
Standard paintball (aged 11+)
Full-size paintball markers with standard 0.68 caliber paintballs. Genuinely thrilling gameplay. Small (~30mph max) impact but a real “sting” so all kids wear full-face masks + torso protection.
- Session length: 2 hours of play + 30 min briefing/kit + 30 min party area = 3h total on site
- Balls included: 200 per player, refills at £5 per 100
- Adult supervision: 1:12 minimum ratio
Age is a hard rule — Splatmaster is safe from 8, Standard is safe from 11. We don’t bend either rule because the equipment is calibrated differently. If a mixed-age group needs both, we run both sessions in parallel using different zones.

Booking + practical stuff
Deposit: £50 non-refundable to hold the date. Rolls into the final bill.
Payment: Card, bank transfer, or split with the invitees’ parents if you’d rather — we send individual booking codes to each parent and take payment from each. Removes the “collecting money from 12 families” hassle from you.
Minimum group size: 8 children for Splatmaster, 10 for Standard.
Maximum: 40 children (larger groups on request — up to 80 possible with full-site booking).
Weekday vs weekend availability:
- Weekday bookings possible during school holidays
- Weekend bookings — Saturdays are our busiest day, book 4-6 weeks ahead in peak season (April-September). Sundays 2-4 weeks ahead usually.
Weather policy: We run birthday parties in rain — kids typically love it. We only cancel for severe weather (thunderstorm, high winds). Postponement = no fee.
What kids should bring:
- Old trainers or wellies (mud is inevitable)
- Long trousers underneath the coveralls (protection against paint spray-through)
- Old t-shirt underneath (paintballs can leave small welts on bare skin)
- A change of clothes for the drive home
- Water bottle
What parents should know:
- Adults staying to watch are welcome free of charge — dedicated viewing area, hot drinks provided
- Every child needs a completed consent form (we email in advance, you distribute)
- We recommend all-day parent contact for the birthday host during the session
Sample party schedule (2h30 total for Splatmaster)
- 12:00 — Guests arrive. Birthday cake stashed in our party area fridge. Parents collect consent forms.
- 12:15 — Kit fitting + safety briefing. Every kid gets fitted properly (they’ll ask “is this too tight?” repeatedly — normal).
- 12:45 — Zone 1 game (30 min): Capture the Flag on the smaller zone
- 13:20 — Break for snacks + drinks in party area
- 13:35 — Zone 2 game (30 min): Attack/Defend on the fort
- 14:05 — Birthday cake ceremony in party area
- 14:15 — Zone 3 game (25 min): Team battle royale
- 14:40 — Group photo + kit return
- 14:45 — Party bags handed out, farewells, and home.
Full schedule flexible — we adapt to the group’s mood on the day.

FAQs
Can I bring a birthday cake?
Absolutely — we have a party area with a table and a small fridge to keep cakes cool. Just tell us on booking and we’ll clear the space.
Can we have a piñata?
Yes — but bring it. We don’t sell them on site. Party bags with paintball memento available as add-on if you want a takeaway.
Are adults welcome to join the play?
Yes — parents often join in for the last game. Fully insured for adults too, no extra charge if they arrive without pre-booking.
What if a kid gets scared and doesn’t want to play?
Very rarely happens but we have a plan for it. Our party host stays with any child who wants to sit out — they can watch from a safe viewing point, still have their cake, still get the group photo. No pressure.
Do you host weekday parties in school holidays?
Yes — Easter, half-terms, and summer holidays we run weekday parties. Often cheaper than weekends. Same package, same site.
What ages have you actually hosted?
Splatmaster: 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 year olds regularly. Standard: 11 through to 18 (and adults). We’ve had “60th birthday” adult parties too.
Do you provide invitations we can send?
Yes — we email you a printable PDF invitation template with your party details filled in. Just print and hand out.
Do parents / non-participating adults get anything?
Free tea + coffee + biscuits in our viewing area throughout the session. Some parents like to watch, some prefer to disappear for a couple of hours (Sandbach town is 10 min away).
